Reporting Concerns
Referees who experience uncomfortable or bad situations with coaches, players, and/or spectators before, during, or after a game should:
1) Gather the facts: who, what, when, where
2) Call the game assignor right after the game
3) Email a report of the incident to the assignor and Stephen Castro <president@nwosoa.org>.
NWOSOA will support referees in addressing bad behavior and by offering guidance.
Thick skin is for crocodiles! We cannot help you if the incident is not reported. We can work with the clubs and leagues to stamp out bad behavior.
Coaches who would like to report a concern about a local referee should contact the game assignor and email their concerns to Stephen Castro <president@nwosoa.org>. We have licensed US Soccer Mentors available to help our referee development.
Ohio Concussion Law
Ohio’s Return-to-Play law (ORC 3313.539 or ORC 3314.03) requires that Ohio youth athletes who are suspected of sustaining a concussion, MUST be removed from practice or play. Ohio laws prohibit a child to return to play (practice or competition) on the same day that he/she is removed on suspicion of having sustained a concussion. Learn more about Ohio’s Return-to-Play law.
When a player takes a blow to the head from the ball, body part or ground, referees should look for these common concussion symptoms listed below. If a concussion symptom is observed, the referee should tell the coach that the player cannot return to the game(s) that day.
- Headache
- Loss of consciousness
- Confusion
- Double/fuzzy vision
- Dizziness
- Balance problems
- Nausea
- Slow reaction time
- Amnesia/difficulty remembering
- Difficulty concentrating
- Sensitivity to light and noise
- Feeling sluggish, foggy or groggy
